You switch ends after every game. In a one-game match, or in the last game of a longer match, you also switch at the midpoint: when the first team reaches 6 in a game to 11, 8 in a game to 15, or 11 in a game to 21. That's the whole rule. The rest is small print that players trip over. This guide is part of our [rules guides](https://picklecall.app/blog/rules).

## When do you switch ends?

Two moments count, and they're easy to mix up.

After every completed game. The [rulebook](https://www.playpickleball.com/2025-usa-pickleball-rules-section-5-service-and-end-selection-rules/) says teams change ends and the initial service after each game. You get two minutes between games, and play can start sooner if both teams agree.

At the midpoint of a one-game match or the last game. In a match that is one game, the teams change ends at the midpoint. In a match of several games, the midpoint switch applies only to the last game, the deciding game. In a best of 3, that means game 3 and no earlier game.

So in a best of 3, a typical match goes like this: play game 1, switch ends, play game 2, switch ends, then play game 3 and switch again when the first team reaches 6 (in a game to 11).

## At what score do you switch?

The switch comes at the midpoint of the game, which depends on how far the game goes.

| Game played to | Switch ends when the first team reaches |
| --- | --- |
| 11 | 6 |
| 15 | 8 |
| 21 | 11 |

The [rulebook text](https://www.playpickleball.com/2025-usa-pickleball-rules-section-5-service-and-end-selection-rules/) gives those same numbers, and [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickleball) describes players rotating sides at 6, 8 or 11 points in games to 11, 15 or 21. The trigger is the first team to reach the number, whichever team that is. The score does not have to be 6-6 or add up to anything.

## Why do players switch ends at all?

Courts are not always the same at both ends. Sun, wind, glare from a window or a slightly different surface can favor one side, so switching shares out whatever edge an end gives. That is why the rule is built around the midpoint: each team gets about half the game at each end. The rulebook does not explain the reason in these rules, so treat this as the common-sense reading rather than a quoted one.

## How does it play out in a real match?

Here is a best of 3 to 11, win by 2, from the first serve to the last.

| Moment | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| Game 1 ends | Switch ends. Up to two minutes before game 2. |
| Game 2 ends | Switch ends again. Up to two minutes before game 3. |
| Game 3, first team reaches 6 | Switch ends mid-game. Up to one minute. Serve and score stay. |
| Game 3 ends | The match is over, so there is nothing left to switch for. |

In a one-game match to 11, only the third row applies, because there is no game before it. In a best of 5, the midpoint switch still waits for the last game, and you still switch after each game before it.

## Who serves after you switch?

The same player. Serve remains with the player holding serve, so a switch never changes who serves or how many points anyone has. In doubles, server 1 stays server 1 and server 2 stays server 2, and the call stays the same. If it was 6-4-2 before you walked across, it is 6-4-2 after.

One minute is allowed to change ends during a game, so there's no need to rush, but keep it quick. Say the score out loud before you move, then pick the service court that matches the score. If you want a refresher on the call itself, see [keeping score in doubles](https://picklecall.app/blog/scoring/how-to-keep-score-in-pickleball-doubles).

## What if you forget to switch?

It happens a lot, usually when a rally ends at 6 and nobody says anything. Switch the moment you notice. According to the rulebook text, a missed end change is made when it is noticed, with no fault and no change to the score. [Bounce](https://www.bounce.game/blog/when-do-you-switch-sides-in-pickleball) gives the same advice: the score stays, nobody is penalized, and play continues from the right service court.

A missed switch can bring a second problem: someone serving from the wrong court or in the wrong turn. If that happened too, here is how to [fix a wrong server or wrong side](https://picklecall.app/blog/doubles/fix-wrong-server-or-wrong-side-pickleball-doubles).

## Do leagues and rec groups change it?

Some do. A ladder, a club night or a tournament can post its own rules, and the organiser's posted rules decide the game you are in. Some formats skip the midpoint switch. If you are not sure, ask before the first serve, not at 6-5. The numbers in this guide follow the rulebook text, and editions can word things differently, so check the edition your event uses.

## Try it

Pickle Call is coming to iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. You pick a game to 11, 15 or 21 and a best of 1, 3 or 5, tap once per rally, and the app keeps the call, the server number and the serving side for you. Read more about [games to 11, 15 or 21](https://picklecall.app/features/games-to-11-15-21). Until then, keep this table handy courtside.

## Bottom line

Switch after every game. In a one-game match or the deciding game, switch when the first team reaches 6, 8 or 11, depending on whether you play to 11, 15 or 21. Serve and score stay exactly as they were, and if you forget, switch when you notice.

## Questions

### Do you switch sides at 6 in every pickleball game?

No. In a match of several games, the midpoint switch happens only in the last game. Between games, you switch ends after every game.

### How long do you get to change ends?

The rulebook allows one minute to change ends during a game and two minutes between games. Teams can start the next game early if both agree.

### Does the server change when you switch ends?

No. Serve stays with the player holding serve, and the score does not change. Only the ends of the court change.

### What if the game is to 15 or 21?

The switch comes at the midpoint: when the first team reaches 8 in a game to 15, or 11 in a game to 21.
