# How Do You Run a Pickleball Round Robin or Ladder Night?

> In a round robin you play with and against everyone in a group of 4 or 5. A ladder night does the same on numbered courts, then moves winners up and losers down.

A round robin is a group of players who all play with and against each other, usually in groups of four or five. A ladder night is a round robin on numbered courts, where the results decide who moves up or down for the next round. Both need three things: a way to set the games, one scoring rule for the night and a clear rule for ranking. This guide covers each one. For more play styles, see our [formats guides](https://picklecall.app/blog/formats).

## What is a pickleball round robin?

In a round robin, [every player plays every other player](https://pickleballcourtscheduler.com/wiki/organizing/rotation-formats-explained/), as a partner or as an opponent. Your partner changes each game, so nobody gets stuck with the same pairing all night.

The size of the group sets the length of the session:

| Group size | Games | Who sits out |
|---|---|---|
| 4 players | 3 games | Nobody |
| 5 players | 5 games | One player each game |

A [club in Edmonton](https://secure.pickleballcanada.org/club/edmonton-pickleball-club/1008/play-formats/1377/) describes a session of six games, each with a different partner and a different pair of opponents. Whatever the size, write the plan down before you start.

## How many players and courts do you need?

Four players fill one court. [Two courts want eight players](https://pickleballcourtscheduler.com/wiki/organizing/rotation-formats-explained/) for a clean rotation, and three courts want twelve. If the numbers do not fit, use groups of five and let one player rest each game.

Here is a simple setup:

1. Give each player a number as they arrive.
2. Use a draw sheet that says which court, which partner and which opponents go with each number.
3. Post the sheet where everyone can see it, and call the first round.

The Edmonton club uses the same idea: the number [decides your court, partner and opponents](https://secure.pickleballcanada.org/club/edmonton-pickleball-club/1008/play-formats/1377/). Late arrivals and no-shows are the usual problem, so set a start time and a rule for empty spots.

## What scoring and game length should you use?

Pick one rule and keep it all night. For a social round robin, one game to 11 works, or a shorter game to 9 when a group of five has to fit five games into the time you have.

For a formal event, the [official tournament guidance](https://usapickleball.org/sanctioning/formats/) recommends best two of three games to 11, win by two. It also lists best three of five to 11, one game to 15 or one game to 21. A bracket of six or more teams may use one game to 11, win by two. Rally scoring is allowed in round robins, but the rulebook still treats it as provisional.

Whichever you choose, tell the players before game one. If your night uses [side-out scoring or rally scoring](https://picklecall.app/blog/formats/side-out-vs-rally-scoring-pickleball), say which, because it changes how fast a game ends. The server rules do not change: see [who serves first after a side out](https://picklecall.app/blog/doubles/who-serves-first-after-a-side-out-in-doubles).

## How does ladder night move players between courts?

Ladder night uses the same round robin, played on numbered courts. Players start on courts that match their level, with [4 or 5 players on each court](https://secure.pickleballcanada.org/club/edmonton-pickleball-club/1008/play-formats/1377/). After the round, you rank each court and move players.

1. Rank each court by wins, then by total points.
2. The top 1 or 2 players move up one court.
3. The bottom 1 or 2 players move down one court.
4. Everyone else stays put, and the next round starts.

One club runs two mini-sessions in a night, which normally takes about 2 hours. Keep the scores written down, because the whole night depends on them.

Rules vary. Some groups move individual players. Others [move winning pairs up a court and split them](https://www.pickleheads.com/guides/pickleball-round-robin). Check which rule your group uses, and announce it before the first round. Players take a few rounds to settle at their level, so do not judge the ladder after round one.

A season ladder is different. Players sit on a ranked list and [challenge someone a few spots above them](https://pickleballcourtscheduler.com/wiki/organizing/rotation-formats-explained/), with a response window of five to seven days. That works for weeks or months, not for a single evening.

## How do you rank players and break ties?

Count wins first. If two players finish level on wins, [total points is the tiebreak](https://secure.pickleballcanada.org/club/edmonton-pickleball-club/1008/play-formats/1377/) at one club. Another simple option is one extra game between the tied players, or a coin toss on a social night.

Whatever you pick, say it before game one. A tiebreak invented at the end of the night feels unfair to somebody.

A short checklist keeps the night on time:

- Fix the group size, the game score and the move rule before the first serve.
- Give each court one person who writes down every score.
- Start the next round on time, even if a court is still finishing.
- Keep a spare player or a rest spot ready for no-shows.

## Try it: keep the scores with Pickle Call

A ladder night falls apart when the scores are wrong. Pickle Call handles that courtside job: one tap per rally, and it keeps the call, the server number and the serving side for you. It handles [side-out scoring](https://picklecall.app/features/side-out-scoring) and rally scoring, singles and doubles, games to 11, 15 or 21, and best of 1, 3 or 5.

For a night with several courts, the [iPad courtside scoreboard](https://picklecall.app/features/ipad-scoreboard) puts the score where players and spectators can read it. Pickle Call is coming to iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. There is no account and no tracking.

## Bottom line

A round robin gets everyone onto the court with everyone else. A ladder night adds court moves based on wins and points. Fix the group size, the scoring and the move rule before game one, write it on the draw sheet and keep the scores where you can see them.

## Questions

### How many games does each player get in a round robin?

In a group of four, three games: you partner each of the other three players once. A group of five is usually five games, with one player sitting out each game. Agree the count before the first serve.

### What is the difference between a round robin and a ladder night?

A round robin is one set of games where everyone in the group meets. A ladder night runs round robins in small groups on numbered courts, then uses the results to decide who moves up or down.

### Do you play to 11 in a round robin?

Often, but short games keep the night moving. Common choices are one game to 11, or a shorter game to 9 in a group of five. Pick one score and keep it for the whole night.

### What happens when two players finish level?

Rank by wins first, then by total points. If it is still level, play one extra game or flip a coin. Say the rule out loud before game one so nobody argues at the end.

### What if you have an odd number of players?

Use a group of five, where one player sits out each game. Do not change the draw halfway through the night.
